After a car is painted, how long do you have to wait until you can put wax on?

Congratulations on the new paint job!! 30 to 60 days is the normal amount of time to let a paint cure. During that time though, feel free to wash the car, using only approved car wash soaps(no dawn!!). You can also use any quick detailing sprays, not quick waxes. After the cure time, do yourself a favor and buy a clay bar and go over the entire car and ensure a nice, completly clean car prepped for waxing. Seal in the thinners with wax and paint could be damaged. I wait 6 months or until I cannot smell paint when I stick my nose next to the car.
It depends on what kind of paint the car was painted with. Generally I would wait a month or two before waxing. This allows any solvents which might be left in the paint to evaporate, and lets the paint harden and become more durable.
I've heard a month. That way the paint can finish doing its process...As it dries by chemical reaction and such. Getting it out into the sun helps it as well.

It kind of depends on the top coat. Did you get an acrylic clear put over the top of the base color? This is a good question to ask the manufacturer of the paint. I would trust them before I took the word of an ';armchair expert';
Most paint manufactures that supply paint to the refinish industry recommend that you allow anywhere from 30 to 90 days curing time after the paint is applied before you apply the first application of wax.





One week is NOT ENOUGH time for the paint to fully cure
Believe it or not, I've been told by auto body techs, at least one month. It wouldn't hurt.
